Artist and musician Mateo Galindo (Spirit Plate, DCS, Odnila.G) continues to take listeners to new sonic plateaus while remaining within the boundaries of popular, American music.
His latest offering, with contributions by Zak Modell and Rola Zeyada, is CriesLol (a clever, aptly titled, spirit of the times update to 'smile now, cry later'). CL's debut release, 'Self-Titled,' is an auditory pastiche and transient journey across the united states, with bus tickets punched and stamped in rural New Mexico/West Texas to Spanish Harlem/ L.E.S. and back down from Saint Paul to Tulsa Oklahoma, where Galindo resides.
Each track contains noticeable, tactile references to multiple genres. The sights and sounds of 'Self-Titled' seem to tie sonically to the various locations where the recordings unfolded. From the opening notes, one is unsure of what to expect; the listener is greeted with solo jazz notes from what appears to be a recorder. According to Galindo, this field recording captured in lower Manhattan, was of a destitute, street fighting woman who could be heard on a daily basis improvising on a recorder. Yet, from this experimental framework we are then led beautifully into Galindo's mélange of popular musical stylings. From the mezcal drenched bossa-nova touches (Misery Train), onto metal machine, industrial bass grooves (From the Land) and dub traces(Iron Sound), and back to the rural, desolate pop, desert folk of a dusty cold night (parking lots, FTN, get blurry), CL leaves no style untouched. As for the track ‘Crashed;’ am I crazy or is this a new genre in itself- fast forward to the 4-minute mark and see for yourself- chopped and screwed space folk?
Yet, despite its variety and unclassified sound, a common mood is felt throughout. ‘Self-Titled’ crosses time zones and enters different climates, however, it's overall tone and identity is pure Southwest. This is best displayed on the track 'Parking Lots.' Sonically minimal in structure, Galindo's lyrics describe a small-town environment where an empty parking lot becomes the setting and hotspot for under-age subcultures. In one line, Galindo references "doing lines all the time," which is a double entendre with one being a reference to skate culture and, well, you can use your imagination for its other interpretation. The sonic brushstrokes on this record remind the listener of staring at the sun from the bed of a truck with your eyes closed, hearing the world through a strange filter. Galindo's hazy, almost reluctant vocals placed above a stripped acoustic chord progression deliver these memories without speaking directly to them. Simply put, "parting words are soon to come," and Galindo and CL will be there to help ease our arrival to this other side.
